MATERIAL
Metal accessories for fashion can be made with
various materials, depending on the uses and quality
you are looking for:
- Aluminium: low quality production and high quantity.
- Iron: very cheap ... ,very low quality ....
- Zama (alloy of zinc and aluminum)
- Very practical and average quality (the most used)
- Brass: very heavy and expensive (Very High Quality)
SURFACE PREPARATION
Raw items surface must be cleaned and made smoother,
before plating.
The more is smoothed, the better quality obtained.
These the choose:
- Tumbling (low quality) : pieces are
vibrated togheter with stones
- Vibrate polishing (medium quality): pieces are vibrated for
log period with various dimension stones, multi steps.
- SISAL Polishing (high quality): items are handbrushed with
rope-brush on the various sides
- “SPANNATURA” cotton polishing (very high quality):
items are handbrushed with cotton-brush on the various sides
- Copper acid + second polishing (TOP QUALITY): first polishing
+ acid copper electroplating (to cover all imperfections) + further
polishing
COLOR GALVANIC PLATING
Items are colored by a chemical process: they are submerged in a bath containing a formula of water and varius precious material (eg: gold, if you want gold color).
There are two types of plating:
- TUMBLING (BURATTO):Items are put all
together in a basket that rotates into the bath. The pieces, colliding
one with the other, will have a not perfect surface. It is used for
very small items or for not-high quality items
- HANGING (TELAIO): Items are hanged on a support, separated
one from the other. Support is immersed in the bath. In this way the
pieces do not collide one with the other and results (surface and color)
are perfect
QUALITY OF GALVANIC PLATING
The longer the items remain immersed, the greater will be the thickness of color deposited,and the stronger the resistance over time and therefore the quality of the accessory. But the higher will be the cost.
- Cheap quality – FLASH : about 0,02
micron
- Medium Quality : about 0,1 micron
- High Quality : about 0,2/0,3 micron
- Very High Quality : about 0,5 micron
- TOP Quality (jewellery): 1 micron and more
(note : 1 micron = 0,001 mm)
For a further protection you can add also a layer
of trasparent varnish.
NICKEL OR NICKEL FREE
All plating colors are made on a NICKEL base,
which confers resistance to the final result.
The contact with Nickel, however, can cause skin irritation.
So, many Nations & brands have banned it and they want accessories
without the presence of nickel.
To obtain the same color resistance without using Nickel (“Nickel-free”),
the thickness of the precious must be increased, and therefore the final
cost.
NICKEL FREE coloring must be specifically requested asking quotation / production
